this is kpix5 news on kbcw. the bay bridge will shut down for five days before the new span opens the tuesday after labor day. we'll tell you what will be done after the closure. >> you dehumanized her. she stopped being a human being to you. she became a thing. >> a judge has harsh words and no mercy on two men guilty of gang raping a 16-year-old girl. >> a turf war over soccer fields. what happens tomorrow that could end seven years of lawsuits. good evening, i'm allen martin, in for ken bastida. >> and i'm elizabeth cook. you heard the eastern span will open the day after labor day. that is tuesday, september 3, at 5:00 a.m. before then, there will be five day shutdown of the entire span both directions for the finishing touches. kpix5 is overlooking the new

span from treasure island with how crews will be accelerating into the home stretch. sue. >> yeah, you know, the road signs are up to let those motorists know about that five day closure. the old bridge span is in its last days and work is on to get the new span ready for drivers. >> made and on site, ready to be installed around 32 broken bolts. the temporary fix is expected to be relatively quick, possibly done in a day. near the toll plaza westbound lanes will be created for the new bridge approach. and interstate 80 will be connected to the new span. near the island, workers will be focused on paving and striping to guide drivers off the new roadway. all of this while demolition begins on the relic built back in 1936. >> existing bridge is the one folks aught to be worried about and that's the one they shouldn't be trusting. >> $5 billion over budget and ten years later than planned,

today. her attackers are going to prison for a very long time, for what happened homecoming night four years ago. in court when one of the rapists apologized. but the judge clearly wasn't having any of it. >> given to jane doe and her family. >> jose says he is remorseful and wants a lighter sentence. >> no words can undue what has been done. all i can do is just apologize for any of my actions. >> the other rapist made no apologies. only identified as jane doe. the gang rape and torture left her with permanent psychological and physical damage. >> i forgive both of you because i deserve to be at peace. but no matter how hard i try and wish, i could never forget and there are parts of me that will never be healed. >> the judge was not so

forgiving. calling the crime dispickable. she said if she could, she would sentence him to more years. >> 33 years to life. he will have to serve a minimum of 33 years before you are eligible for parole. >> because peter was a minor at the time of the crime, he got 29 years to life. neither man shows emotion. >> you dehumanized her. she stopped being a human being to you. she became a thing. >> the judge says she is beyond shocked what the defendant said to the girl, who was 16 at the time. after she left the richmond high school homecoming dance, up to 20 people raped her and beat her for two hours on campus. the beating so bad, her parents couldn't even recognize her face. peter, 20, and 22, will be about 50 years old when they are eligible for parole. >> the defendant's family

declined to comment. both of the defense attorneys plan to appeal the conviction. at the martinez courthouse, kpix5. >> two men are already serving lengthy sentences. two more have to stand trial. the prosecutor wants to identify even more attackers. >> a san francisco man pleaded guilty to running over and killing a man with his bicycle. but he won't spend a day in prison. that's because kpix5 tells us, the dead man's son asked a judge to give the cyclist a second chance. >> bicyclist, chris entered court and the record books as possibly the first u.s. bicyclist to plead guilty to felony vehicle manslaughter. they will serve 1,000 hours of community service. >> we are hoping this is going to send a very clear message, like loss of work to everyone, regardless of whether you are riding a bike, walking, we all share responsibility. in providing safety in our

community. >> the plea deal comes a year and four months after he ran red lights as he made his way to the marketing intersection. at market, he later wrote in his blog, i couldn't see a line through the crowd. and i couldn't stop. so i layed it down and plowed through the crowded crosswalk in the least populated place i could find. he slammed into the pedestrian who died four days later. >> type of person my father was, he always taught me to give people a second chance. no matter what happens, because that's what makes society civil. >> his son asked the court to order him to do his community service, helping the elderly. such as with low income housing, and -- >> to assist people with traumatic head injuries, because that's something my father would have dealt with if he would have survived. so, those are the things we are hoping he would do. you know, to the life he has taken. >> kierly left court wall comment or apology.

allows him to return to court and ask his felony be reduced to a misdemeanor. he would still have to complete his community service. in san francisco, kpix5. >> number of dead from the days violence that followed a crackdown continues to climb. at last check, the health ministry confirmed 638 people have died. nearly 4,000 others are injured. a mostly empty and quiet scene in cairo on the second night of cur curfew. as you can imagine, it's an overwelmingly emotional time for the families who lost loved ones in this crisis. cbs reporter visited with some of the grieving family members at a mosque today. we want to tell you, some of the images you're about to see are very graphic. >> inside the mosque today, we saw the human face of the suffering caused by yesterday's brutal crackdown. there were rows and rows of

bodies wrapped in shrouds. they were covered in bags of ice to keep them from decomposing in the heat. people sprayed air freshener. all day long, there's been a steady stream of bodies leaving this mosque in frantic relatives arriving, hoping to find their loves ones and bring them out for burial. but for many, the nightmare wasn't over. >> this is a mayor. >> came to egypt from his home in tampa, florida, to attend a family wedding. his brother lives in cairo. he took a break to go, too. >> he got a chance to see the whole family. we didn't know it was going to be the last time. >> father of two young girls was among the protesters. early this morning, acmoud went

martha's vineyard calling his national security staff to talk about egypt. later, he had this to say. >> as a result, this morning we notified the egyptian government that we are canceling our biannual joint military exercise, which was scheduled for next month. going forward, i asked my national security team to assess the implications of the actions taken by the interim government. and further steps that we may take as necessary with respect to the u.s. egyptian relationship. >> the president did not answer reporter's questions about whether he would cut off the more than $1 billion in aid that the u.s. gives the egyptian military every year. bay area egyptians gathered in santa clara tonight. tonight's vigil honored the people killed in cairo. over 100 people in attendance wore white as a symbol of peace and harmony. organizers are urging egyptians to put aside their differences and stop the violence.

overnight they rammed a ston p into the brass doo some got away with a few pieces of jewelry. overnight, they rammed this stolen pickup truck into the brass doors of tiffany jewelry store. officers were at the high end jewelry store within minutes, but it was too late. the crooks smashed display cases and they did get away with jewelry. but they did not get the valuable pieces because they were locked up in the store's vault. >> it's crazy. i can't believe this happened. you hear about these things in movies. walnut creek is a safe place. there's shopping and some very

are providing safe, available facilities for all of our san franciscoens, including kids. >> no one thinks the current state of the field is any good. >> it's a gigantic sponge field. >> i have personally seen, a girl i'm coaching run across the field and break her ankle in a gopher hole. >> put artificial turf out here. it's been on since 2006. soccer fans say there's no place in california, maybe the country, with so many soccer players and so few fields in san francisco. and this will go a long way to alleviate that. you have the turf, put up lights, you could play up to 14 hours a day. >> basically going to have the equivalent of the mothership landing behind them. >> bad decisions they say, need checks and balances. >> san francisco built a lot of freeways that they regretted later on. there's a lot of political pressure for that. >> goal now, a court victory.

the landmark overlooking the east bay was the worst hazard. it is so close to the fault. >> the heyward fault is 1,000 yards that way. and 10 to 12 seconds, that building will be a pile of rubble. >> the company behind this skyscraper destruction is the same one. the impact will be minimal. >> if it lands on this pile of concrete, i have more than done my job. >> for the average person, you will not feel the vibration. >> researchers want to learn as much as they can. >> any time we can expect a large magnitude. >> watching closely. >> i'm not worried about it, i'm interested in it. maybe i should be more worried about it and i'll find that out. the demolition will cost $12

sunshine tomorrow, perhaps a little bit of morning cloud cover. warm, but not hot. your average high is 88 tomorrow. saturday, sunny and warm once again with a high of 87. so, we have low pressure off to our north, but it really didn't make any progress toward us. the weather wasn't much different. aside from that increased humidity. so we have high pressure off to the east. where it is hot and typically is this time of year. we have low pressure over the ocean, we all know the water is cool. where are we getting our air from? the hot side or the cool side? just enough on the on shore flow to keep temperatures close to normal. really beginning on sunday, but begin to feel the difference monday and tuesday. low pressure moves closer to us. we get more of that chilly ocean influence flown in our direction. that increases and our temperatures go down. that will happen coming up next week. we are staying near normal. great weather for you and your family. morning clouds, yeah, they will be there. but plenty of blue sky each

you might think twice before reaching for that extra cup of coffee. a mayo clinic study says drinking four cups a day is linked to higher death rates. 56% more likely to die from any cause than their noncoffee drinking counterparts. and women had a twofold greater risk of dying. the coffee drinkers were more likely to smoke and less likely to exercise. >> so i don't think it was coffee. just me. if you think the pothole riddled roads are bad, take a look at this. the soviet era road, they call it olympia highway, not worthy of a gold medal. it looks more like a jigsaw puzzle.
